Dr. McCort (Hellborn/Asylum of the Damned)

Devil Or Angel

The original was done by the Clovers in 1956 but the best known version was done several years later by squeaky-clean Bobby Vee.  We have changed the words (he definitely wasn't singing about himself) to suit the not-so-squeaky clean Dr. McCort from Hellborn (Asylum of the Damned).

Devil or angel, I can't make up my mind
Which one I am I'd like to wake up and find
Devil or angel dear, whichever I am
I’m crazy, I’m crazy, I’m c-r-a-zy

I look like an angel
My smile is divine
But I keep them guessin'
With that psych doctor line

Devil or angel, please say I’ll be fi-i-ine
Take it or leave it, I've made up my mind
Devil or angel dear, whichever I am
I’m crazy, I’m crazy, I’m crazy

Doctor, Doctor, give us a report.
What’s the diagnosis for Dr. McCort?

Schizotypal Personality Disorder
with presenting symptoms of

  • odd beliefs or magical thinking that influences behavior and is inconsistent with subcultural norms (e.g., superstitiousness, bizarre fantasies or preoccupations)

"What can I say, it's a nut house, asylum. This is the place to be: murderers,
           rapists, pedophiles.”

[Wow, we can hardly wait to meet them…And what's with this Harvester guy
           anyway?]

"In this life we're all destined for something. I guess this place has become
           my destiny."
[O-o-o-k, if you say so…]

  • odd thinking and speech (e.g., vague, metaphorical, or overelaborate)
"I think it's time we all face the truth.  How can I say this - It's quite common,
          I'm
afraid. New physicians often get caught up in the delusions of the
          people
they're trying to cure. They enter the world of their patients. They
          unknowingly
succumb to the very same mental illnesses." [Talk about the
pot calling the kettle inky ebony jet black, Dr. McCort…]

  • suspiciousness or paranoid ideation
"You know if you really think about it, you have no idea if I'm a real doctor or
            just
another mental patient"

[Gee, ya know, it IS hard to tell, what with your
            creepy commenta and all.]

  • inappropriate or constricted affect
"Cheer up, it only gets worse"

"Try not to care so much. We're here to contain these people, not cure them"

[Gee, you have a great bedside manner, Dr. McCort.  Did they teach you that
            in med school?]

  • behavior or appearance that is odd, eccentric, or peculiar
"We call this etiquette. It's mostly pomp and circumstance, but the abridged
           version will do just fine."

[Why are you wearing that hooded cloak, Dr.
McCort?  What’s with that odd ring you’re wearing?]

"It makes me feel someone is watching over me."
[oh-oh, put another tally on the paranoid ideation line...]
  • unusual perceptual experiences, including bodily illusions
[Oh-oh, here comes The Harvester again.  We're outta here....]

Harvester

Devil or Angel? Hey, that’s us too. We’re devilish little angels
…always up to something...

Devil or angel, We can't make up our minds
Which one we are we'd like to wake up and find
Devil or angel dear, whichever we are
We’re zany, we’re zany. We’re z–a-n-y.

We act like an angel [sometimes]
Our site is divine  [or at least pretty good]
But we keep them guessin'
With what we’ll do next time

Devil or angel, you figure it out
Take it or leave it, we don’t need to pout
Devil or angel dear, whichever we are
We’re happy, we’re happy. We’re h–a-p-py
