![]() ![]() Musicals are often
seen as fluff but in fact many have dealt with serious social issues,
for example, the treatment of prejudice in South Pacific or West Side Story. Absolute Beginners
is in this tradition, dealing in part with racial
prejudice in 1950s Britain. It owes a bit to West Side Story, with the warring
gangs the British pre-Mods and Teddy Boys instead. And let's not
forget shameless exploitation of the youth culture, a feature
that seems to remain constant across decades.
Absolute Beginners met with mixed reviews; viewers either loved it or hated it. We fall into the former category and not merely because Bruce is in it. The music is great, the story timeless and the allegory captivating. And then there's Bruce... In one of his standout roles as the neo-fascist thug
Flikker, Bruce's intense presence draws every eye to him when he is on
screen. As an extra treat, we get to hear him sing a few lines
from Jerry Lee Lewis' "Goodness Gracious Great Balls of Fire."
Frankly, we'd love this movie even if Bruce were not in it but Flikker
makes it worth watching over and over again."FLIKKER"ING IMAGES
